The Improvised Musical - Term 2 2026 - Saturday

Advanced elective courses focusing on special skills or improv formats – The Improvised Movie, The Deconstruction, The Armando and more!

This class is about learning how to leverage the Harold format to make up improvised musicals that are fun, silly, and surprisingly watchable.

We’re not aiming for polished theatre, perfect vocals or jazz hands. We’re aiming for committed choices, clear ideas, and songs that delight the audience because they fit the scene and show at hand.

Over the term you’ll work on:

  • Improvised singing: get comfortable making up lyrics and melodies on the spot
  • Combining scenic elements with song: utilising character choices, relationship dynamics and "game of the scene" within a musical context
  • Simple song formats that help you know when and why to sing
  • Ensemble work within a musical - Learn how to move and create musical numbers as a group

You’ll be supported each week by a professional improv musician, so you’re never singing alone. The music does a lot of the heavy lifting, so your job is to commit and have fun.

At the end of the eight weeks, the class will perform a fully improvised musical together in your student showcase!

Past students from this class have gone on to audition for existing Melbourne musical improv groups, or start their own teams like last year’s hot new group Pitch Please.

Your Teachers

The course is led by Laura Buskes, who performs musical improv year-round and in festivals with Les Improvisé.

On piano is Isaac Haigh, an award-winning comedian and experienced accompanist who knows how to support improvisers as they figure things out in real time.
